While I was seriously upset last night at the election results, this morning I tried to look at the glass as half full. I realized that, hopefully, this will be the start of something good for Conservatives. The obvious and widely accepted "problem" with the Republican party has been its move away from Conservatism and towards a more centrist philosophy. I realized that I was in fact voting against Obama and Landrieu more than I was voting for McCain and Kennedy. Had these two been put in office, the Republican party would have continued to be watered down by "non-Conservatives". While I obviously think that anyone (well almost) would be better than Obama and Landrieu, the Conservative brand would not have been helped, fundamentally at least, by their election. Hopefully now the Republican party can find their "Reagan Conservative" that will not only energize the base (instead of just using it for votes) but actually apply fundamental Conservative principles to our National and State Governments.
My other reason for optimism is the "tall order" for the future President. Many promises have been made and there are a lot of problems to be ironed out. There could be a huge letdown if the "ship isn't righted" pretty quickly, or at all, by President Obama. Had McCain been President as all this continues to sour, then once again Conservative principles would be blamed because Republicans were in power, whether Conservative principles were applied or not.

Come on Eddie, isn't that the same thing that everyone hoped for after the mid term elections in which the republicans gave control back to the democrats a few years ago? The republican party hasn't only become more watered down since then.
Ken, You think that's gonna cause the same kind of mobilization as a socialist getting in the White House? Seriously? We still had the White House (supposedly) to calm any real fear or desperation. Now there are little or no safeguards and reality is beginning to set in. And the pendelum may not even be through swinging to the left. It's going be a tough fight, because we are gonna have to start the fight within the party (i.e. "Anonymous" Moderate Republicans attacking Palin yesterday.) If your view of hoplessness is accurate, then there will never be a conservative republican party ever again.
The problem is that the Democratic socialist coming into the White House is only replacing a Republican Socialist.
The Republicans will be locked in a bitter fight to define themselves. Some say go more conservative and some say go to the middle.
It will be interesting to see who wins.
I agree Jim, but i think the election, coupled with the ousting of all "moderate" Republicans in the Northeast may be a black eye for the "move to center" crew.
the republican party has NO leadership, the Ronald Reagans, and Newt's are gone, or not in the lead to Head up the republican party, saddly they keep missreading the elections, and think when the democrats yell and scream at them about Non Partisan Voting, the republicans think they are speaking for those who elected them, the republicans cant muster the focus like the democrats can, the democrats will do anything....I mean ANYTHING to achieve power, the republicans just dont get it, till they have good leadership, which I find odd, they are supposed to BE Leaders to get the JOB,.....and decide that they will do what the voters ask of them, they will keep finnishing second. and the US will eventually succumb to the pressures of Marxism and socialism, and the gimme gimmne gimme mentality...
what the Republicans need to keep in mind...they arent elected to COMPROMISE, they are elected to RUN the show, and Push the conservative AGENDA, the democrats have Mastered the Communist Dialectic, meaning they have Mastered the Art of negotiation, and always ask for MUCH more than they are willing to accept...so by the time they are done giving back...they are right where they wanted to be in the first place....
